At its October 21, 2010 meeting, the Fulton County School Board adopted the calendar for the 2011-12 school year. It follows a 177-day model that shortens the school year by three days but adds 10 minutes of instructional time to each day. As a result, the district is expected to save approximately $1 million in operating costs due to reduced expenses in transportation and facility operations as well as personnel costs associated with positions which work with students on school days..

The calendar format is a change from previous years when state law mandated that students must attend school for 180 days. New guidelines allow school systems to deviate from the 180-day calendar, provided there is no reduction in instructional time.
